Japan: Bird Flu so Bad They’re running Out of Land to Bury the Chickens

The culling of millions of chickens in an effort to contain a sweeping pandemic of avian influenza in Japan has caused a major shortage in places to bury the poultry.

Over 17 million birds have been killed, and they have to be disposed of in a way that won’t contaminate local waterways or spread the virus — and that’s where the problem lies. The island country has a finite amount of land, and that is leaving them scrambling.

They can incinerate the carcasses, but even that is an option with limited resources.
