FDA Warning: Philips Sleep Apnea Machine May Catch Fire

The FDA has issued a public safety issue warning on Philips’ sleep apnea machines. The warning is for the DreamStation 2 Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device, which has had 270 consumer reports of “thermal issues such as fire, smoke, burns and other signs of overheating.”

Stopping short of a recall, the company said it’s OK for consumers to continue using the devices “provided that the safety instructions in the instructions for use … are followed.” Patients and providers should watch for overheating, the company said.

The DreamStation 2 had already been recalled once in the past, because foam components in it had a tendency to degrade into pieces small enough to be inhaled. “The company warned at the time the particles may be toxic and cancer-causing,” Forbes said.
