Disease Detectives Gathered at a CDC Event — a COVID Outbreak Erupted

For the first time since 2019, the CDC held an in-person meeting of its Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Conference — and ended up smack-dab in the middle of a COVID outbreak.

Reports of attendees testing positive for the virus continued throughout the four-day conference. About 2,000 people were there; as of May 2, 35 had tested positive.

“CDC is working with the Georgia Department of Health to conduct a rapid epidemiological assessment of confirmed COVID-19 cases that appear to be connected to the 2023 EIS Conference to determine transmission patterns in this phase of the COVID-19 pandemic,” CDC spokesperson Kristen Nordlund, told ArsTechnia.

The Washington Post reported, that while some attendees masked up for the event, many did not. The CDC is working with the Georgia Department of Health to investigate the outbreak. In the meantime, the CDC is encouraging everyone ages six months and older to stay up to date with all their COVID-19 vaccines.
