In a world’s first event with far-reaching implications for the future of how babies are born and to whom, a 6-pound, 13-ounce baby boy has been born from a uterus that was implanted into his mother by a robot.

The uterus was donated to the mother from a family member; in vitro fertilization (IVF) was used to impregnate her. The baby was born via a planned C-section. While the use of the robot was a first, this was not the first baby born from an implanted uterus. The robot enabled doctors to perform procedures that were either very dangerous to be done by hand, or were simply impossible to be done by hand.

The success of the procedure offers hope to women without a uterus, such as someone who’s had cancer or other conditions preventing them from carrying a baby.
