An alarming number of people in Australia are coming down with shingles, so many that the country has issued a health alert for everyone over age 50 to discuss the condition with their doctors, whether they’ve been diagnosed with it or not.
In a 7 News Australia Twitter thread, numerous commenters are tying the sudden flood of cases to the COVID shots. Canadians started making the connection almost as soon as the jabs came out in Canada, in July 2021.
At that time, while health officials acknowledged there might be an uptick in shingles or chickenpox after the vaccine, they stressed that the jabs weren’t actually causing the varicella infections. Rather, the disease may just be “reactivating” in a person who has already had shingles or chickenpox.
The painful shingles condition is susceptible to stress and certain auto-immune-changing medications, according to Dr. Gerald Evans, chair of Queen’s University’s infectious diseases division in Kingston, Ontario. “Even the stress of getting a vaccine could act as a factor in causing a shingles flare-up,” he said.
