Scientists Transfer Alzheimer’s to Healthy Young Animals

In their relentless quest to conquer Alzheimer’s disease by learning what causes it, scientists have managed to transplant gut microbiomes from humans with Alzheimer’s to young, healthy rats that then suffered cognitive decline.

They also learned that only specific types of bacteria play a part in that decline. Researchers have suspected that the gut played a part in Alzheimer’s for some time; this study confirms it.

“Alzheimer’s is an insidious condition that there is yet no effective treatment for,” Sandrine Thuret, a neuroscientist at King’s College London (KCL)., said “This study represents an important step forward in our understanding of the disease.”
