A government-funded project has found that expanding access to Green Social Prescribing greatly improves mental health and well-being. This program helps people with mental health needs by connecting them to nature-based activities like gardening, conservation, and outdoor therapies. Researchers from the University of Exeter, working with other universities, discovered that these activities reduce anxiety, increase happiness, and improve overall life satisfaction.

The study, funded by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), highlighted the positive effects of Green Social Prescribing. Participants, including children, ethnic minorities, and people from low-income areas, saw improvements in their mental health after joining nature-based activities. Their happiness and anxiety levels matched national averages, and many felt a strong sense of accomplishment and well-being.

Connecting with nature is an effective way to improve mental health, as shown in this study. Spending time outdoors, getting fresh air, and enjoying sunlight can reduce stress, improve sleep, and even strengthen the immune system.
