Miscarriages and Stillbirths Have Gone Up. Why?

After studying more than 3 million cases of women at risk for a miscarriage, researchers determined that those taking benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax are 70% more likely to suffer a miscarriage, the Daily Mail reveals.

Ativan and Klonopin are also included in that class. Benzodiazepines are sedatives.

“The scientists said their findings ‘highlight the necessity for healthcare professionals to ‘meticulously balance the risk-benefit ratio when considering the use of benzodiazepines to treat psychiatric and sleep disorders during pregnancy,’” the Daily Mail said.

The study was published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.

Long-acting benzos drugs processed more slowly in the body, such as Valium, showed an increased risk of miscarriage of 67%, while short-acting benzos like Versed showed a 66% increased risk.
