mRNA Gene Therapy Shots Now Headed for Cattle

In an effort to fast-track gene therapy shots for cattle diseases, Paul Toole, Australian deputy premier and minister for Regional NSW, announced in September 2022 that he was asking vaccine manufacturers to fast track their development.

If manufacturers can get it done, the first mRNA shots for cattle would be for foot and mouth disease (FMD) and lumpy skin disease. The plan is to team up with U.S. biotechnology company Tiba Biotech to develop both vaccines.

In justifying the call for expediency, meat and livestock Australia managing director Jason Strong said, “This type of vaccine technology may not require the longer testing and approval processes required for conventional vaccine development and importation as it does not use animal products.”

The hope is to have the shots ready by August 1, 2023.
