Lose Weight, Commit Suicide?

Drugs intended to treat diabetes and obesity are coming under scrutiny as more and more patients report suicidal thoughts as a side effect.

Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are three drugs that work by slowing digestion and reducing hunger, but suicide and suicidal thoughts connected with them or similar drugs have been reported since 2010. The FDA has recorded 265 reports of suicidal thoughts; 36 of them were suicides or suspected suicide.

While unexpected and serious side effects are reported from time to time with many drugs, simple reports of certain side effects don’t necessarily establish a direct causal relationship with a drug, according to Thomas J. Moore, faculty associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

However, “It does mean that a patient’s complaint should not be automatically dismissed,” he said.

Currently, the U.K., Canada and the European Medicines Agency are investigating the suicidal thoughts reports on Ozempic, Wegovy and similar drugs; the FDA told Reuters news service they are “evaluating” such reports and will decide whether to take action later.
