Animals Used as Subjects to Test Opioid Overdose Vaccines

Human clinical trials for vaccines that prevent heroin and fentanyl overdoses are set to begin in early 2024 — following preclinical data from animal-based trials. These results originated from early safety trials on animal models that were established as “safe enough” to proceed with testing on humans.

The vaccine is designed to neutralize the target opioid with assistance from an ingredient called INI-4001, which is an adjuvant intended to improve the vaccine response.

“Based on the efficacy data we see in our preclinical data and the established safety profile in animal models, we are very hopeful that these vaccines will be successful,” said Marco Pravetoni, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington, where he’s been working on the vaccine for more than 10 years.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health granted full funding for this initiative; researchers are only waiting to finalize their submission to the FDA.
