A new study shows that regular exercise could help prevent colon cancer from coming back — and it may work as well as some medications. Researchers followed nearly 900 people who had surgery and chemotherapy for colon cancer. Those who joined a supervised workout program had a 28% lower risk of their cancer returning and were 37% less likely to die from any cause.
The exercise group worked with fitness coaches for three years. Their goal was to do the equivalent of a brisk 45- to 60-minute walk three to four times a week. After nearly eight years, people who exercised were more likely to be cancer-free than those who only got general health advice.
Doctors say this is big news for cancer patients. Exercise doesn’t have side effects like some drugs, and it can improve strength, mood, and heart health. Experts now want to make exercise part of standard cancer care and find more ways to support patients in staying active.
