What’s Really in Your Morning Bowl of Cereal


A new study shows many popular breakfast cereals in the U.S. are becoming less healthy. Between 2010 and 2023, cereals added more sugar, fat and salt while cutting down on protein and fiber. These changes are concerning since many children eat cereal every day.

Researchers looked at over 1,200 cereal products. They found fat levels rose by 34%, salt by 32%, and sugar by nearly 11%. At the same time, helpful nutrients like fiber and protein dropped. Experts say many cereal boxes still make health claims, but the ingredients don’t always match.

Health leaders say the cereal aisle can be confusing for parents. They recommend choosing real, whole foods like oats, fruit, eggs or whole grain bread. As schools start offering healthier meals, experts hope food companies will do the same for families at home.
