A new study shows that cancer deaths linked to alcohol have nearly doubled in the U.S. since 1990. The biggest rise was in men over age 55. In 1990, fewer than 12,000 people died from alcohol-related cancers. By 2021, that number had grown to more than 23,000.
The study looked at seven types of cancer tied to alcohol, including breast, liver, and colorectal cancers. Experts say alcohol turns into a harmful substance in the body that can damage cells and raise cancer risk. Even small amounts of alcohol can have long-term effects.
While cancer deaths overall have dropped in the U.S., deaths tied to alcohol are rising. Health officials say people need to be more aware that alcohol, like tobacco, is a cancer risk. They aren’t saying people can’t drink — but they do want people to know the facts before making choices.
