Study Links Diabetes and Weight-Loss Drugs to Increased Blindness Risk

A new study suggests that popular diabetes and weight loss drugs like Ozempic might be linked to a rare type of blindness called NAION (non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy). Researchers noticed more cases of NAION in patients using these drugs.

Lead researcher Dr. Joseph Rizzo emphasized the need for more studies to confirm the link and urged patients to discuss any concerns with their doctors. Novo Nordisk, the drug manufacturer, stated that current data do not conclusively associate their medications with NAION but continues to prioritize patient safety.

Medical professionals stress the importance of monitoring potential side effects. Patients experiencing vision changes should consult their healthcare providers to evaluate the risks and benefits of their treatments. The study highlights the delicate balance between managing chronic conditions and remaining vigilant about new, rare complications.
