Federal health officials are investigating a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 162 people across 25 states. Among the cases, 54 have been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported. Preliminary investigations point to cucumbers as the likely source, with 47 of 65 interviewed patients reporting cucumber consumption. Testing has confirmed salmonella in a cucumber sample, and further tests are underway.

Additionally, an investigation is ongoing into a Salmonella Braenderup outbreak, which has caused 158 illnesses in 23 states. The similarities in timing, locations, and demographics of the two outbreaks suggest they may be related. Fresh Start Produce recalled cucumbers shipped to multiple states last month, urging consumers to avoid eating the affected products and to clean any contaminated items and surfaces.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most people recover without treatment, severe cases can occur, particularly in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. It is recommended to avoid the recalled cucumbers and maintain strict hygiene practices to prevent infection.
