A major egg recall is underway after a salmonella outbreak sickened at least 79 people in the U.S., health officials said. The August Egg Company is recalling about 1.7 million brown organic and cage-free eggs sold between February and May. The eggs were sent to grocery stores in nine states: Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington and Wyoming.
So far, 21 people have been hospitalized. The CDC says the eggs may carry a harmful strain of salmonella that can cause diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and stomach cramps. Young children, seniors, and people with weak immune systems are most at risk for serious illness.
If you have these eggs at home, don’t eat them. Throw them out or return them to the store. Also clean any surfaces the eggs touched. For a full list of affected brands and dates, visit the FDA or CDC websites.
