Prevent Lyme Disease With These Summer Safety Tips

Pediatricians are warning parents about the increased risk of Lyme disease from deer ticks, which are most active during the summer months. Dr. Christina Brown of Kaiser Permanente notes that bites from these tiny parasites can cause fever, headaches and a target-like rash.

Considering the difficulty of diagnosing and treating Lyme disease, preventive measures are crucial when venturing outdoors. Children are at higher risk due to more outdoor play, but no region of the U.S. is exempt. It is recommended to avoid tick-infested areas like leaf piles and long grasses, walking in the middle of trails and not sitting on logs. It is also recommended to wear light-colored long pants and sleeves, tucking pants into socks, and wearing closed shoes and a hat. After outdoor activities, perform thorough tick checks on children and pets and avoid using insect repellent containing DEET due to its neurotoxic effects.

Early detection and removal of ticks are vital. Ticks are tiny, especially nymphal ticks, so check bedding for several days after exposure. Save removed ticks for testing for pathogenic organisms. By following these commonsense prevention strategies, parents can help protect their children from Lyme disease during peak deer tick season.
