Poor Seine Water Quality Halts Triathlon Event

The Belgian triathlon team pulled out of the planned mixed relay event in the Seine River on Monday after athlete Claire Michel became ill, according to the country’s national Olympic committee. This decision coincided with the cancellation of a swimming training session because the Seine did not meet water-quality standards.

Media reports said Michel was hospitalized with an E. coli infection after competing in Wednesday’s women’s triathlon. However, both the World Triathlon and the International Olympic Committee were unaware of these claims.

Concerns about the Seine River’s water quality have been prominent during the Paris Olympics. E. coli levels have fluctuated, rising after rain and falling during dry spells. Olympic organizers are under scrutiny as they aim to make the Seine swimmable, with plans to open public bathing areas by 2025. The Belgian Olympic Committee hopes to learn from these events to ensure better conditions for future competitions.
