Playing Politics With Milk in School Lunches

A fourth of Congress — 106 members — has signed on to H.R. 1147, a bill that would replace tasteless, watery, nonfat milk in school lunches with nutritious whole-fat milk. But a left-leaning food policy organization, Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), is calling for the bill to be pulled.

Although they didn’t cite any peer-reviewed studies to support the idea, CSPI claims fat is bad and allowing full-fat milk in schools will raise kids’ LDL cholesterol levels. Besides, schools are required by law to serve low-fat regular and flavored milks — which H.R. 1147 would statutorily change.

Interestingly, though, the USDA is considering banning flavored milks in schools because the sugars used to make the no-fat milk palatable are bad for kids too.

Not to be outdone, pediatric nutritionists counter that the artificial sweetener, sucralose, could be used in place of sugar, even though sucralose comes with its own set of safety issues, including a new study showing that it can break up your DNA as it’s digested.
