UNC Wants Judge to Block Release of Baric’s Gain-of-Function Research

EcoHealth Alliance, the U.S. research agency at the center of scrutiny during the COVID-19 pandemic because of its ties to the Wuhan Lab, is back at work with its grant reinstated to continue studying coronaviruses.

The grant had been terminated during the Trump administration as speculation swirled over the possibility that the pandemic had been triggered by a leak from the lab. Although the NIH later reinstated the grant, it had remained suspended until now.

The NIH added an “extensive list of restrictions” on the research, according to the journal Nature, including not conducting any of the research in China. It is also prohibited from performing gain-of-function research, where they experiment on the potential enhancement of the virulence or transmission of a virus.

Supporters of the grant renewal claim the studies being done under the grant are essential to preventing future pandemics.
