New York Times Advocates Getting Zero Sun This Summer

From cabanas with curtained walls, to broad-rimmed umbrellas, to long-sleeved swimwear, and more, the list of sun-blocking equipment The New York Times says you need to enjoy the sun this summer — without getting any sun — is long and cumbersome.

Cumbersome mostly, because if you take the Times’ advice to get zero sun this summer, you’re going to need a lot of bags, boxes, and buggies to get all your sun-blocking stuff — which also includes special sun capes, gloves, visors and full-face masks, along with obligatory supplies of sun-blocking creams and, of course, sunglasses — to the beach.

In defense of all this gear and sun-shunning, the Times has enjoined Dr. Maressa C. Criscito, an assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Langone Health, to inform you there is no such thing as a safe tan.

Besides skin cancer and making you look older earlier, sun exposure can cause sunspots and discolorations on your skin, Criscito doomily adds.

So, is it worth it to have a zero-sun summer? It’s up to readers to decide, but if you do venture out, don’t forget that the SPF 50 sun-blocking lotion you’re using must be reapplied every two hours to whatever exposed skin you have left, the Times says.
