A new study published in the Scientific Reports suggests that people with ADHD may be more likely to have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). After reviewing data from nearly 4 million people, researchers found that those with ADHD had a 63% higher chance of also having IBS compared to those without.
The researchers think the gut microbiome — the bacteria living in your digestive system — may play a role in this connection between the brain and the gut. Many people with ADHD also report stomach problems like gas, constipation, or bloating. This study adds more evidence that the two conditions may be related.
However, some experts believe anxiety and depression, which are common in both ADHD and IBS, might explain the link instead. More research is needed, but doctors say this shows the importance of looking at both physical and mental health when treating ADHD.
