A New Discovery on What's Causing Itchiness

The FDA is warning people about a rare but serious side effect from stopping two allergy medicines — Zyrtec and Xyzal. Some long-term users who suddenly stopped taking them reported intense, full-body itching. The condition, called pruritus, was serious enough in many cases to need medical treatment.

Most people who restarted the medicine said the itching went away. Some were later able to slowly stop using it without problems. The FDA plans to update the drug labels to include this risk and says people should talk to their doctor before stopping the medicine after using it for months or years.

Zyrtec and Xyzal are commonly used to treat seasonal allergies, year-round allergies, and chronic hives. They’re usually safe and effective, but if you’ve been taking them daily, don’t quit suddenly. Check with your doctor for the safest way to stop.
