Exercise Twice as Effective as Antidepressants in Treating Depression


A recent study has uncovered that exercise can be twice as effective as antidepressants in treating depression. Engaging in activities like walking or jogging two to three times a week showed the best outcomes, with symptoms improving by 63%, compared to just 26% with antidepressants alone.

Researchers analyzed data from over 14,000 individuals with major depressive disorder across 218 trials. They discovered that vigorous exercise provided the greatest benefits. While all forms of exercise were beneficial, activities like yoga, cycling, and strength training also showed significant improvements.

Dr. Michael Noetel, the lead author, emphasized that this is the largest study to date assessing the effectiveness of exercise on depression.  Following this study, doctors are now prescribing exercise, with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS recommending group exercise sessions with a trained practitioner at least once a week for 10 weeks.
