A study published by JAMA Network revealed a direct positive correlation between women who have received infertility treatments and the risk of stroke. This study consisted of 31 million patients who gave birth in a hospital from 2010 to 2018. Of these 287,813 had received infertility treatments.
The study found that risk of a hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain) is twice as high in women who received fertility treatments, and the risk of an ischemic stroke (interrupted blood supply to the brain) 55% higher than women who naturally conceived.
Dr. Cande V. Anthe, chief of epidemiology and biostatistics at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey said that it’s possible that the large amount of estrogen women take during fertility treatments may play a part in the increased chance of developing blood clots — one of strongest factors leading to a stroke.
