Eating These Foods Might Be the Reason You’re Having Nightmares, Study Finds

That late-night snack might be messing with more than just your waistline. A new study published in Frontiers in Psychology suggests what you eat could actually affect how well you sleep and even influence your dreams.

Researchers surveyed over 1,000 college students about their eating habits and sleep patterns. About 40% said certain foods had a noticeable impact on their sleep. Sweets, spicy meals, and dairy products like milk and cheese topped the list of sleep disruptors. On the other hand, healthier options like fruits, vegetables, and herbal teas were linked to better rest.

The study also explored the impact on dreams. Roughly 5.5% of participants said food affected their dreams, with desserts and dairy most often associated with nightmares. While it’s not fully clear why, experts think gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating or cramps from lactose intolerance, might disturb sleep and trigger vivid or unpleasant dreams.
