Boar’s Head has broadened its recall of ready-to-eat meat products amid a listeria outbreak. Initially recalling over 200,000 pounds of liverwurst and deli meats, the company has now added 7 million pounds of additional products, including ham, bologna, bacon, and sausage. The recalled items, produced at Boar’s Head facility in Jarratt, Virginia, have sell-by dates from July 29 to October 17. These products were distributed throughout the U.S. and various international locations.

The outbreak has led to 34 reported illnesses across 13 states, resulting in 33 hospitalizations and two deaths. Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium behind the outbreak, can cause serious illness, especially in pregnant individuals, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, with severe cases presenting headaches, stiff neck, confusion, or seizures. Pregnant individuals face additional risks such as pregnancy loss or premature birth due to the infection.

Consumers are urged to discard or return any recalled products and to thoroughly clean any surfaces that may have encountered the contaminated meat. Boar’s Head has halted operations at the affected facility to prioritize safety and quality. Anyone exhibiting symptoms of listeriosis should seek medical attention immediately.
