Walking for just over an hour a day may reduce the risk of chronic lower back pain, according to new research published in JAMA Network Open. The study followed more than 11,000 adults and found that those who walked at least 78 minutes daily were less likely to report long-term back pain years later.
People who walked over 100 minutes each day had a 23% lower risk of back pain, while even moderate walkers saw a 13% drop. Walking at a faster pace also helped, but not as much as the total time spent moving.
Researchers say walking is a simple and accessible way to support back health — and overall health, too. While the study doesn’t prove that walking directly prevents pain, it adds to growing evidence that daily movement can make a big difference.
