Research from the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) reveals a significant link between bowel movement frequency and long-term health. Analyzing data from over 1,400 healthy adults, the study found that regular bowel movements, specifically one to two times daily, correlate with a healthier gut microbiome and reduced risk of chronic diseases.

Participants were categorized by bowel movement frequency, showing that those in the “Goldilocks zone” of one to two times daily had better gut bacteria balance compared to those with constipation or diarrhea. The study also found associations between bowel movement frequency and blood markers indicating potential kidney and liver damage, highlighting the importance of maintaining regular bowel health.

To reduce the risk of constipation, incorporate fermented foods to “reseed” your gut with beneficial bacteria. Simple changes like swapping processed foods for high-fiber options, removing gluten, sugar, and artificial sweeteners, and regular exercise can significantly improve gut health. Staying well-hydrated and avoiding certain medications also helps.
