The Toughest Plastic Bag Ban Is Failing

A plan for Kenya to be a leader in ending the use of plastic bags around the world has backfired with a startling crash, in essence compounding the problem to the point that smuggled single-use bags have turned into a blooming black market.

How such a lofty goal turned into a plastic trash nightmare of epic, impossible proportions is a tale that extends from the environment to local wildlife and livestock, to governments that promise action but look the other way when the smugglers show up.

So, what to do? Unfortunately, some think the problem has grown so large there’s nothing much more they can do.
